Rick Garcia and Aylee Cody Showing At Camelion Design For June Artwalk
Rick Garcia has been an artist and composer for over 25 years. Much of his work as a visual artist explores polyphony. His painting, primarily oils on wood panel, contain many layers of color, symbols and textured brush strokes in different tempo relationships. To Rick, painting, much like music, is a generative process that pulls him along. He takes cues from his materials and views his work as growing organically and directly from his tactile approach to color and texture.
Rick attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where he met and worked with the Artist Trimpin for 12 years. He has recieved awards and grants from the Art at Work program, Museum of Arts and Culture, Washington Composers Forum, Jack Straw Foundation and The Tacoma Art Museum.
Aylee Cody has been making jewelry her entire life. As a little girl she made pieces out of torn, hand painted paper garnished with sequins and beads. Today she uses precious gems and metals. Aylee studied Metals at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, OR. Aylee is inspired by the Art Deco period and enjoys the juxtaposition of opposing forces such as old/new and masculine/feminine. Her passion is in the intricate details of each piece whether it be the rough cut stone, the filigree setting, the hand forged texture or the meticulous finish of the surface. Aylee employs traditional metalsmith techniques, uses repurposed metals when possible and is committed to purchasing materials from socially responsible vendors.

José E. Montaño at Anima Mundi For April Artwalk
Anima Mundi worldwise design is pleased to welcome artist José E. Montaño, a genuinely inspired visual conceptualist. José is a Ballard native and has designed many award-winning, stylistically innovative projects, including commercials, music videos, and live events. In 1991 he won the MTV Award for Best Art Direction for R.E.M.’s Music Video ‘Losing My Religion’.
On view at Anima Mundi this spring will be Jose's original oils, framed giclee prints and handpainted silk scarves.
The primary motivation for José's paintings is to inspire others to view life from multiple cultural optics. As he has worked professionally as a Production Designer for the entertainment and advertising industries, he is very aware of the narrow ideological focus of content produced for mass media. He works from a genuinely multi-cultural perspective with a global audience in mind.
José was born in Seattle, and was raised here and in Europe. His late father, the late architect José Duran Montaño, was from La Paz Bolivia and his mother is Swedish American. After Graduating from the American School in London he attended The San Francisco Art Institute where he received a Master of Fine Arts.
Several years ago José returned to live in his family home in Magnolia and is once again enjoying being a part of the local Ballard community.

BallardWorks Presents The Venus Show for March Artwalk
The Venus Show presents Venus and Adonis paintings by By "JAGOP" (Just a Group of Painters), eleven Gage artists who are also students of Gage teaching artist Barbara Fugate. There will be other works showing alongside these reconsidered images of the Venus de Milo and Adonis.

The Venus Show At BallardWorks For February Artwalk
Ten Seattle area artists are showing at BallardWorks this Saturday, February 8th (6-9 pm) and again on March 8th. Two public showings/ receptions fill the walls with landscapes, figures, and still life paintings—including special paintings that celebrate feminine and masculine love and beauty based on the famous sculptures of the Venus de Milo and Adonis. Mentored by Barbara Fugate, these artists present a variety of voices with individual approaches.

In her own words: "I paint from observation and I want to become familiar with the various relationships that present themselves in front of me. The air, the color, the light, and the distance and space between the sitter and I shift week to week. More significantly, time moves on, and people’s lives change. In the end, I only hope to be truthful to what I see and to build upon that strange, unique, and, I believe, temporary relationship that transpires with each sitting and each moment."

October ArtWalk Artist: Karen Mataya
Painter Karen Mataya will be featured at Starbucks this October. Her oil paintings feature a series of tranquil tropical ocean scenes. Such gorgeous images to meditate on as the weather turns colder in Seattle.

Venue Presents the Paintings of Walter Share for the July ArtWalk
Artist
Walter Share has been a painter for 35 years. Through his talents with
watercolor, oil and acrylic paints as well as digital (drawn on the
computer), he creates images of nature and landscape from the places
where he has lived and painted including Seattle, Oregon and Alaska.
Watercolor, oils and acrylics are his favorite mediums.
Walter
enjoys the soft edges that permit paintings to change with mood and
invite imagination to complete the painting. He also appreciates the
ease of digital imagery in creating features with crisp lines and colors
like silk screens.
Through
his company, WalterColors, he does his own printing for greeting cards,
prints and calendars to get the colors just right. At Venue this month,
Walter will be expanding his collection of Northwest cards and matted
prints, as well as offering some framed and original works in variety of
sizes. Walter will also be on hand during Artalk demonstrating his
process.

After a one year hiatus, Rick Garcia, whose work as a painter relates to music and sound, is back in Ballard with an amazing show. He began his work exploring sound in the early 1980’s, coming to Seattle in 1988 as a composer, working and studying with the sound sculptor Trimpin for over twelve years. During that time, his work became more and more visual.
In 1995, Garcia began to paint with oils on wood. Largely self-taught, his process is not bound by learned techniques. "To me, painting, much like
music, is a self-generative process that pulls me along." Garcia takes cues from his materials. "I look at my work as growing organically and directly from the materials and my own intuitive process."
Garcia explores polyphony and texture that are the result of many different layers of color, symbols and textured brush strokes in different tempo relationships. Shapes and symbols create a musical language within the painting. Totemic signs emerge in the work resulting from his systematic approach to color and layering. Garcia uses this process to create paintings with an abstract and primitive edge.
