Waterscapes by Tod Gangler At Art & Soul For May Artwalk

For the May Artwalk, Art & Soul will be showing photographs by Tod Gangler. These are from his series of waterscapes, printed in the beautiful color carbon printing process. 

The viewpoints range from the coast of California to the Brittany coast of France and highlight the common element of land, sea and sky meeting in gorgeous tableaus of color.

Painter Amy Pleasant Returns to Art & Soul in September

For September, Art & Soul presents a new series by local artist, Amy Pleasant. After a challenging year, Amy used her experiences to inform this new body of landscape paintings.  Turning to nature for a space of solace, Amy took walks in some of her favorite forests in the Puget Sound region for comfort and a broader perspective.

Her usual painting practice normally filled with light and color on every layer began instead with a canvas of inky blackness and became a metaphor for the dark night she has struggled to let go of. On these canvases she wanted to see what would come out of her mind and her hand. The inspiration of those forests; a reminder of the perfection of nature, the cycle of life and most importantly a reminder that light appears from the darkness.

Portrait and Figure Artist Aron Hart Showing at Art & Soul During June Artwalk

Art & Soul is pleased to show artwork by Aron Hart for the month of June. Aron is a gifted and award-winning Puget Sound portrait and figure artist, specializing in both traditional and non-traditional portraits. 

Aron developed his skills by studying locally and abroad, most recently graduating from Gage Academy's Drawing and Painting Atelier, where he is now an instructor. Much of the allure of Aron's work comes from his strong grasp of light and shadow and, whether painted in oil or drawn, his pieces always demonstrate his passion for contrast - on the canvas, in the artist, and in the subject.

Gordon Lambert Connects The Act of Reading With The Reader at Art & Soul

Art & Soul is pleased to be showing works on paper by Gordon Lambert for the month of May.  

Working with pencil and paper Gordon enjoys drawing letters, words, alphabets and blocks in text.  Combining these elements has led to an exploration of the act of reading and what it might take to depict the mind/eye connections and processes involved.

Also included in this show will be a few pieces showing aspects of television, baseball, small aircraft and local landscapes as subjects.

Mindy Kalee discovered a love for photography by accident, after spending nearly three years living, working and traveling through mostly undeveloped and impoverished countries throughout South and South East Asia and Africa. It was during these years that she fell in love with the human spirit, finding life and resiliency in the most obscure, desperate, and painful situations. She was amazed at how individuals and cultures who have suffered so greatly can live with such a profound brightness of spirit, while continuing to advocate in the midst of the travesties around them. Kalee started taking photos of the people and places known to her. She found that in doing so, she was able to capture how the dichotomy of life and death, darkness and light, hope and despair, history and future connects all of us as humans, no matter where we are from on this planet.

Presenting New Work, art by Joan Stuart Ross & Kappy Trigg.

Joan's current series builds up layers of encaustic medium as metaphors for energy, introspection and depth. In a process similar to intaglio, the grids and interstices of color-filled carved lines create an atmosphere underneath and between suspensions of wax, resin and color. Kappy's new works layer surfaces of acrylic paint on panels to create a lacquer-like density, a luminous glow. Interspersed are dabs of color that relate to the idea of foul bite in etching--random marks and glyphs engage to create a mysterious narrative.

Justin Kane Elder simplifies images by deconstructing them into basic geometric shapes with the goal of constructing a complex design out of simple forms. Each piece focuses on individual colors and how those colors relate to the space they inhabit. Colors are piled together to create a network of corresponding objects. These objects are what make each composition identifiable.

Photographer and mixed media artist Ginny Banks is upfront and center this month. Her brilliant color images show Bank's concern with attitude, setting, and description. Though each photograph is mostly orchestrated by Banks, she allows a spontaneous response to come from each individual. Color, texture, props, clothing and background combine with the pose itself. For Banks, photography is a way to express the inherent beauty she sees in a person.

Salish Sea Trading Cooperative
24th Avenue Dock, at the foot of 24th Ave, east of PacFish

Salish Sea Trading Cooperative, Ballard's sail transport community non-profit, proudly hosts oil painter Charles Fawcett. Specializing in marine subjects, he has exhibited widely and is regularly featured on the cover of 48 North and the FOSS Maritime calendar. Fawcett is a member of Eastside Association of Fine Arts, the American Society of Marine Artists and the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters. A Master Mariner and a keen yachtsman, he lives on the Eastside.

Robin Siegl makes oil paintings inspired by the industrial waterfront she sees regularly in frequent rowboat trips. The Duwamish River, Ballard ship canal and parts of Lake Union are her favorite places to investigate the enormous bulk of ships and barges. The wiggly water on which they float reflects marked-up, heavily worn surfaces and massive shapes, providing endless ideas for paintings. Siegl strives to convey the beauty in this subject, one that is not often thought of as beautiful. This exhibit includes five new paintings on heavy square paper, some exploring her new favorite subject; the thin line of light between two adjoining barges.

For the past six years, Theresa Connolly has created multi-color reduction prints using linoleum and oil inks. The long process of carving and building up an image with layers of color gives her time to contemplate the things she loves like the moon, water and trees. Although detailed drawings are part of the preparation, she pares them down to a few lines on the linoleum to guide her. This approach allows her to work with the unexpected, after each layer of color. The result is a suggestion rather than a strict representation of a landscape or object. Recently, Connolly has started making extra prints to cut up and create collages, as well as adding watercolor silkscreen prints to her repertoire. Whichever method, she sees her prints as thank you notes to the people and elements in her world that sustain her.
