Jo Simonian Brings Stitched Fiber Art To Bloom For June Artwalk

Ballard resident, Jo Simonian, creates her art with felt, embroidery thread, beads and other objects. She finds the rhythm and repetition of stitching  relaxing and loves seeing what emerges on a blank piece of felt. She has illustrated several children's books using these materials and is now working on individual pieces.

Resident Artists Exhibit New Work At BallardWorks For April Artwalk

Just as the spring rain heralds fresh new flowers, the cold of winter encourages artists to cocoon in their studio and produce new work. New concepts, new materials, new dreams and visions, captured and held in place for your viewing in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Let's not forget new artists as well. Amy Hamblin joins the roster, working on the main floor in Spark Studio. Her current work is created from recycled rubber playground balls. These dynamic pieces are wearable art unlike anything else you've seen.

Three floors of art studios and exhibition spaces open for the April Artwalk. Families and kids welcome. Enter through the 1st or 2nd floor doors on 30th Avenue. Includes painting, wearable fiber art, lampworked glass, encaustics, jewelry and print making, all under one roof.

Fabric Landscapes by Sandra West at The Scoop @ Walter's for April Artwalk

I have enjoyed working with fiber and fabric all my adult life and began quilting in the 1990's. I used commercial fabrics to create my first small, matted and framed fabric landscapes in the summer of 2008.

I continue to use commercial fabrics and prefer cottons because of their wide range of patterns and colors that make up my pallet.  Each creation is made by selecting, cutting and manipulating the fabrics, then placing and sometimes layering them to form the natural elements.

Next the pieces are hand appliquéd, hand quilted, embellished, matted and framed. Most of the pieces are framed without glass to allow the viewer to enjoy the detail and texture of the fabrics, hand quilting and embellishment.

My most recent creations are on display during April 2013 at The Scoop @ Walter's. They include landscape, cityscape and still-life arrangements.

I am especially pleased to display my work here on Sunset Hill where I live with my husband, Don Ostrand.
