A commercial artist and designer, Jim Dixon has spent the past 20 years engaged in a multitude of design projects including residential and commercial interiors, environmental graphics, product development, packaging, games, furniture, houses and gardens. Along with his creative talents, he has also developed skills as a mechanic, fabricator, illustrator, carpenter, plumber, electrician and mason. 

Two years ago, Jim and his wife Caroline brought all of their talents, skills and experience together to launch American Automata, an art studio dedicated to the creation and fabrication of mechanical art, or what he aptly describes as "kinetic storytelling." His first piece, "Man As Machine," was shown at the Onichi Gallery in New York in 2011. He was also Artist in Residence at the Museum of Art & Design in Stratford Upon Avon, U.K. Currently all of his pieces are crafted in the Pacific Northwest at his studio. 

At Venue this month Jim will be featuring Grungeness, the bad boy of tide pool. This guy is Dungeness crab meets Seattle Grunge. Also featured will be Grungy's east coast cousin, Lobsta. He's bigger, badder and the king of bling. In a more serious vain, Cascadia in Motion, a tribute to the Pacific Northwest will also be shown.

'Compositions and Gestures,' A Photographic Study on Display at BalMar for the December ArtWalk

Centering around Human interactions and body language, ‘Compositions and Gestures’ are a photographic study of the human body as a means of communication.

In ‘Compositions’ the nude body is recomposed from the original photograph to interact with another photograph within a new composition. Each new composition begins as two or more photographs that create an abstract cellular foundation for the interaction between the bodies. ‘Gestures’, are an exploration into how a hand or foot speaks differently than the arch of a back or rib cage; creating expression as well as landscapes in a sometimes unrecognizable fashion. Both bodies of work play off one and other as a micro macrocosm of humanity.

Ready to Wear, Hand Made Shoes By Mother/Daughter Team of Marca at Tannya Bernadette For the Month of December

Tannya Bernadette Consignment Boutique will be hosting its last Seattle Designer Series event, featuring Marca shoes, during this month's Ballard Art Walk. 

Marca is a brand of hand-made footwear that wants to preserve the art of shoe-making. Each pair of shoes is manufactured by hand using traditional shoe making techniques by artisans in Colombia. Marca is a mother and daughter duo of shoe dreamers. Post-It Art Drawings by Clare Johnson On Display at Ghost Light Theatricals for December

Ballard’s theatre company, Ghost Light Theatricals, has Clare Johnson’s art on display for the month of December.
 
Since 2005, artist and writer Clare Johnson has drawn on a post-it note each night before bed, recording an experience from the day or a thought at that moment.  This exhibition will show a portion of the project, which now totals more than 1,500 drawings and spans her life in London, Cambridge, Oxford, and Seattle.  


 

The Post-it Note Project was featured in Seattle Weekly’s Best of Seattle in 2011.


Ghost Light Theatricals recently finished a punk-rock adaptation of Moliere’s Scapin in November and will open a gender-swapped version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in January 2013.
 

 
Ghost Light Theatricals is a non-profit theatre company that was established in 2003 and they have been in their space, the Ballard Underground, since January 2010. Ghost Light Theatricals' mission is to create bold, imaginative stories inspired by classic texts that resonate with a modern world.
