Musical Guest: Johnathan Rooke Jazz

For this month's May ArtWalk, we will be featuring a very special addition, live music! It has always been our goal to bring in live performances for Ballard ArtWalk to make this event a truly festive and fun experience for fellow ArtWalkers.

Our first musical guest will be Johnathan Rooke. Jonathan Rooke performs the early 20th century jazz standards with a flair all his own. His new take on the old tunes has entertained crowds of all ages in coffeehouses, lounges, and street festivals in Seattle, New York, Boulder, and Minneapolis. If you are a regular at the Ballard Farmers Market, you may have been lucky enough to catch him and his band playing for everyone on a nice sunny day. 

For this ArtWalk, you can catch his performance this Saturday (5/12) at the Marvin's Garden bell tower 6-9pm. Art, live music and sunny warm weather is in the works for Ballard so come join us for what will be a truly beautiful evening!

Kathryn Schuessler arrived in India in 2010 with a broken camera. "After a month of feeble attempts at convincing myself that photography would ruin my memories and take away from my experience, I decided to buy a tiny point-and-shoot to use for the remainder of my trip. What you see here are a few of the resulting images."

All pieces in the exhibit were made in South India. Each photo was flipped, printed, and transferred to wood by hand.

The artist's photographs have published locally and nationally. Schuessler has received grants from various arts organizations and taught photography,
drawing, blogging and English in Japan, Palestine, and India. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with an emphasis in photography and painting.

Pyrographer Rachelle Wirfs Featured In May ArtWalk

Washington pyrographer Rachelle Wirfs looks to the rich plant and animal life found in the cold waters and surrounding green forests of Puget Sound for her primary source of inspiration. Celtic, Japanese and Mexican Folk Art influences have crept into some of her work as well. Pyrography--literally "fire writing"--can be done on a variety of surfaces, but Wirfs prefers to burn her designs onto cherry, pine and basswood. The individual character and grain of the wood determines the design best matched to that piece. Her goal is to create art with a pleasing tactile quality."
