The BalMar Features Photographs by Paul Knutzen for March Artwalk

Paul Knutzen is a local artist who currently lives in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of South Seattle. Paul’s attributes his interest in art to his father, a painter himself, who exposed Paul to a wide range of art as a child. He graduated from Seattle Central Community College with a degree in graphic art and soon found a home in the video game industry, where he spent over a decade creating 3D environments.

Much of Paul’s artwork reflects his strong affection for architecture and the organic elements found in man-made structures. He enjoys experimenting with different mediums and surfaces in order to create subtle and unpredictable textures in his artwork. When he is not working in his garage studio, Paul can often be found wandering the city streets with a camera looking for inspiration in unusual buildings, trains, colorful signage, or local street art.

Photographer Karen Hyams At Umpqua Bank During September Artwalk

As a former painter, photography is very interesting to Karen Hyams, as there are so many opportunities for distortion between her brain and the camera sensor. This bending and distorting makes photography plastic, surprisingly like painting, which feels very natural.

Happenstance: A Photo Show By HollyAnne Sarah Faber at Annie's Art & Frame

Some of my favorite photographic encounters with people have arrived by pure happenstance. They are rarely executed by planning concepts, models and locations.

These journeys happened by one single decision. One choice to take a job offer that introduced me to creative people. One choice to volunteer for an organization that took me to the other side of the world. In the end, whenever I have a decision to make, I know that each choice is a different catalyst for a new adventure and new moments of happenstance.

All images were produced by the Mamiya C330 with Kodak Portra 120 film. Locations span from the Pacific Northwest, Southern California and North Africa between 2012 - 2013.

Photographs by Nathan Brend at Umpqua Bank For June Artwalk

Nathan Brend grew up in Fargo, ND and moved to Seattle several years ago. He loves to explore the Pacific Northwest, a place much different than where he spent his first 30 years. The never ending prairies and farmland of his youth are now a bustling city surrounded by mountains and water.  He enjoys discovering new perspectives of local places seen every day that tourists travel miles to visit.

His photographs represent a mix of the tourist and local resident. His goal is to provide interesting photos for visitors to take home and inspire Seattleites to rediscover the beautiful place in which we live.

Subtle Beauty by Christy Kruse At Filthy Rich For May Artwalk

Christy Kruse has been studying classical art, traditional and digital photography and videography locally and around the world for more than a decade. She is recognized as an intuitive artist who is able to capture emotion and subtle beauty.

After the sudden passing of her father, she dedicated her work to capture the beauty of life and its most precious moments. Moments that are treasured and cherished—as seen through her eyes and heart and lend an appreciation to the miracles around us.

Portrait of a Flower:
“Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men or animals. Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock.”
Henry Ward Beecher

Christy is available for portraiture, video and fine art commission.

Garet Wolfe Brings Vivid Photographs to Savour

Garet Wolfe is originally from Fullerton, California and has spent most of his life creating art in one form or another – from music to printing to building Tiki bars. Garet picked up a camera again, inspired particularly by the digital revolution of the 21st century, and has been producing original photography ever since.

Buoyed by a certificate program at the University of Washington, Garet has been inspired to work in an increasingly complex and interesting way with all types of subjects. While many photographers lamented the passing of the darkroom, Mr. Wolfe can successfully build upon the solid foundation of traditional techniques, elevating his work to the next level with all manner of digital mastery.

“I like to make things look better than they do in real life. Softer, more colorful, even dreamlike,” says Garet when asked about his intentions. This comes across vividly in his marvelous work prompting the question, “how did he do that?” A fan recently remarked that his work is simply magical.

Garet lives in Greenwood with his wife and collie.
